I’m Tia Johnson, a millennial luxury travel blogger based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
I have lived and breathed travel since I knee-high to a grasshopper… or something equally Southern that verbalizes how young I was.
Growing up as a military brat, I had the privilege of traveling to some of the most amazing places and lived an extended amount of time in Germany.
I loved it so much that I joined the Air Force and left the country for a few more years before returning to pursue a career outside of the government.
I used to do it all…
Formerly a media advertising executive, I decided to quit my high-pressure career path in 2016 and spend 3 weeks traveling in China to clear my head and take a much need break. It was somewhere around the poolside bar of the Ritz Carlton in Sanya or the Nanshan Buddhist temple that I decided to give it up the media life for good and focus on the things that made me happy.
Like traveling to gorgeous cities, eating top-notch nosh and being pampered in spas, rather than chasing clients around town and explaining how Google scores websites.
While I did in fact ditch the media scene (in a manner of speaking), I didn’t quit the workforce just yet. I traded in my lifestyle magazines to be the business development manager for a financial education nonprofit. I was looking for lower stress, better vacation time, and a more fulfilling career. And it was good, for a while.
The allure lasted a short time while before I was back to missing lunches, putting off trips and vacations and spending my days staring at a screen and writing all day. Like so much writing! So much in fact, that I started losing focus of the things that I was trying to pursue, like this blog, and spent all my time building someone else’s dream. After much deliberation and a long talk with my partner J, I decided to ditch the 9 to 5 for good.
It’s time to change the way we think about vacation
It’s time to take a breather and enjoy their hard-earned vacation time. Even if it’s just short jaunts to nearby places or a day trip to the next town over. Save your vacation time for bigger and better trips. You’ve spent years getting educated and building your career. Let’s keep that momentum going! But don’t forget to stop and ask yourself…are you enjoying the fruits of your labor?
I created Just Her Carryon as a millennial luxury travel and lifestyle blog dedicated to the living a fun and balanced existence while logging all those frequent flyer miles. And I do it with just a carryon to keep it simple.
Here you’ll find the best travel and career tips, luxury hotel and product recommendations, and the motivation to get out and explore… as well as some good ‘ol destination inspiration.
If you are one of the career-oriented millennials who hate the idea of staying in hostels, skipping out on crazy adventures and the finer things to pinch pennies, this is the website for you!!!
I’m going to level with you… After spending countless nights at 5-star resorts and tasting amazingly decadent dishes over the past few years, I refuse to go back. And neither should you.
Life is meant to be experienced. You are worth more than bunk beds and ramen noodles.
Eh, that sounds expensive, right?
It’s not and I’ll tell you why…
Luxury travel has changed.
You don’t need to be a Bey or Jay to travel in style.
Luxury, in the past, was associated with wealth, experience, something older people did or bought or experienced.
The Ritz Carlton, the Bentleys, the Rothschild vintages and the Longines’, all of these symbolic brands, the very best money can buy, were firmly in the domain of successful parents and grandparents, and luxury was a synonym for opulence, but we’ve moved beyond that now.
Millenial luxury travel is about the experiences that show you a new perspective of the world.
You work hard. Clawing your way to the top of your field and staying on your grind.
Let’s play hard too.
